Designer Dreaming: Ring Strap Idea

November 19, 2008 by Designer Ella

This is a new feature on the blog, dealing with the actual designing (like on an indie/handmade scale) of handbags. Hope you enjoy!

Reader, Ellen Hart recently commented about a Versace bag’s strap on the blog,

I love the handle on the purple bag…

(Original post)

Which got me to think more about how such a look could be constructed in a fun way. It’s simply, basically about:

Purse Rings!

One could attach them onto a flat leather strap, or connect them with pieces of leather … think of your own creative methods! If the result doesn’t require the comfort of a hand or shoulder strap, like is say decorative, one could even use “gate” rings (right) that open/close to make a more chain-like - well - chain, on a bag — perhaps like with the Paddington Capsule style.

If this has inspired you, or you’d like to review this topic idea, or for any reason - feel free to leave a comment!

And if we do inspire you, remember to be a designer, not just a designer-inspired. ;-)

    Fall for the Season..

October 14, 2008 by Designer Ella

I was born and mostly raised in Massachusetts, always south of the heart of the city of Boston. I now live in a dream vacation land of Florida - in the nicest (read: safest) city in the state, to boot. But ah - no boots, not really. Yes, October starts the best of the season here in Sunny F.L., but I do miss my Mass. It started with tiring of the Chinese Food in this state, being the comfort foodie I am. And then I missed out on late-invited NYC Fashion Week events (not that I could afford plane tickets this insane financial year) and then … well life can get tough.

Recently my Facebook friend and fellow fashion blogger, Lady Coveted, posted a photo shoot in the northern crisp air with sweaters and oh - the turning leaves. And yes, I do miss those leaves!

My mother reminded me that the pretty palet changing symbolizes dieing and yet - there is this undeniable appeal, isn’t there?

Sunny Rising: Grape Leaves ClutchSunny Rising: Grape Leaves Clutch

Handbags can always come to the rescue though, or well in this economic crisis if one can’t truly afford a purse, perusing teases but still titillates. My misfortune could be good luck to a reader, though, because the clutch I have in mind can only be in one person’s two hands, for it’s a one-of-a-kind handmade on Etsy.com. (And not inexpensive, at a more-than deserved true-designer pricetag of $239.)

The burnt look of the tooling on this burnt sienna leather accessory nearly perfectly sums up the desire raging in us, no? And on the back, read words perfect for Autumn’s Sweetest Day: “grow love”.

Those are words to end a poem by, let alone a mere blog post.

    Introducing MUXO Handbags

August 25, 2008 by Designer Ella

Based on the style-preference delusion that fashionistas don’t detest big fringe, and seemingly out of the 70’s, has arrived new bag design house MUXO. Designed and crafted solely by Camila Alves and her own dear mother, Muxo’s bags are painstakingly labored over by their own hands, tools and a rarer cowhide from Brazil - no not even sewing machines are used by this team. That’s not to say this indie business isn’t big biz backed or have gone/are going it alone en route to already-instant fame, for the designer is a fashion-and-Hollywood-insider as a former model and current baby-momma to Matthew McConaughey’s newborn son Levi.

So there’s no need for Camila to pray to label namesake, an African goddess of water, for help - which is lucky because what does water have to do with land-animal-skinned accessories? No, with unique “ironing” details and bags that go beyond leather-jacket fringe and long straps, such as a frame satchel and several nice clutches - I even predict mother-daughter team will encounter a bit too much success than four hands and not much more electricity than lighting can handle. Perhaps little Levi will help in the future? The 1 month old was recently quoted, “Dad, mom, I wanna go support mom’s purses”. Aww! I hope this couple is as open-minded as they’d seem. ;-)

If you’re interested in these unique bags, they range from $450 to $1,400, are available through their official website, or you can check them out in person at L.A.’s Kitson.

The Successor to the Stam! (Seriously!)

April 29, 2008 by Designer Ella

Suffering succatash!!! OK enough with the S alliteration, but my tongue is practically hanging out of my mouth anyway. Or it’s closer to my eyes bugging out. After I saw this new bag from Marc Jacobs my mind went into a tizzy.

Marc Jacobs Cecilia - better than Stam?
    Buy the Marc Jacobs Cecilia

I think I like it better than the beloved Stam! It’s such a refreshing re-take, which is confoundedly rare in the bag design world, actually. First of all, doesn’t that strap give hope that it can rest on one’s shoulder?? The gathers are made even better, and you know what, that straight horizontal zipper on the Stam always looked too much like a grumpy mouth anyway. This is a bit less edgy, aside from the lack of the frame closure with HUGE kiss lock - and I really like the classicism of the Stam look. (And finally, I hate to say it but the Stam also has an odd look, sure its uniqueness is amazing, but um hmmm…. me lovey this more!!)

The good news for all is that unlike many designers, this new and later version does not come complete with price hike. This Quilted Cecilia sells for the same as the standard Stam - well just a few dollars, literally, more - at $1375.

The bad news for me is that I now have rent to pay and have less to spend on fashion, since my money goes mostly to purse making and fibre art supplies (oh yes, after bills ;-)). I did just get a new job that starts in a month, but … mmmmmmm. That’s supposed to go toward me *not* “borrowing” rent money from my mother, actually. Te he. (Hey I’m still weak, weak Designer Ella, even with my new making the bags things!)

Now I’d love to sell off a bag to get this, I would really looove to buy this bag, but I sure don’t actually want to sell my Stam. Someday though, I hope hope for someday.

Until now I plan on making a details-altered inspired bag. More inspired, less knock off, trust me. I’m going to chronicle this journey here on the blog, too! Stay tuned, and please, if you love, see in person, find more colors or buy the bag (affiliate, but not subliminal), comment and let’s chat!

    Freckleface’s ‘Money Bags’ Bra Wallets

February 1, 2008 by Designer Ella

They’re bras with … breastises inside (check 2nd picture–mature)! This is the most inventive handbag creation since the first person correlated purses with vaginae (probably the first man to see a woman with one, and I vouch for the concept).

    Freckleface Money Bag

These wallets are open inside like pouches, with one zippered pocket, so they could double as small clutches, too. Just be careful who’s around when you pull your cash out of the - um - cups. Whoo! Bag flash!

What a riot! This custom Money Bag (different bras/skin tones) is available from Freckleface for only $35. Beyond a steal for a must in any purse collection!!

And for more fun, check out the beyond saucy baldie lady, the Britney - it’s the um, other part. ;-) Click for more (story, photos, etc.) »

The Best Leather Worker on Etsy’s Pro-Like Handbag!

November 15, 2007 by Designer Ella

Unearthed - The Oslo BagUnearthed, an exotics worker who makes accessories for sale on Etsy.com, seriously amazes me. She often uses these exotic skins, like lizard, for wrist cuffs and bags. And she’s a reasonable artist, too. I’m talkin’ a python purse would run in the mere low hundreds, NOT $10,000!!!

The bag I’m featuring tonight has rich brown leather trim, fun studs; all surrounding a funky, textured wool body. The bag is slightly reminiscent of COACH, but would compare to their $700~ish bags. The pricetag of this purse? $345, but it’s honest pricing folks! The designer chose the finest of leather and you can clearly tell the purse it well put-together.

I say, if this (The Unearthed Oslo Bag), is what Indie can do - let it be the future!

LE Dooney & Bourke Celebrity Designed Bag by Hayden Panettiere

November 8, 2007 by Designer Ella

Dooney & Bourke LE Hayden Panettiere handbagDooney & Bourke really knows how to pick a celebrity to give them a little publicity, while also targeting one of their main demographics: teens (no, not sci-fi buffs). Hayden Panettiere has designed a bag for the brand, to come out for the Holidays 2007. Like a hero, super star Hayden, who plays Claire Bennett on the wildly popular, Heroes TV series, actually designed something a bit more toward the classic end of Dooney’s style - no, she didn’t go the teeny-bopper pattern route. (Miss P., you are redeeming yourself from your past escapades of friend’s shirt licking!) Maybe the subtle look of the actress’s design will help to mature her peer’s own senses of fashion?

Hayden Panettiere as Claire Bennett, the CheerleaderA limited edition bag, due to arrive to order in early December, it is however just a bit lacking in creativity and that something special to warrant its exclusivity, stature, and the slightly higher price tag than many Dooney’s, at around $500.

Really, in order to warrant me buying a Claire Bennett purse, a kind of plain one, a bit too expensive one — well I want it to be a true super hero bag and be indestructable, with a warranty for free repairs - or “regenerations” by the Dooney company.

But that’s just the Geek Chic in me!

    Hand Made, Truly. Shockingly.

November 7, 2007 by Designer Ella

When does the phrase “hand made” really mean something? “Designer bags” are “hand made”. Yeah, right — we can’t actually know the level of strictness that label really means for most brands (below Hermès). And then there’s the hand made for which straight stitching means it’s, well, “cute” straight - if-ya-know-what-I-mean. And that’s great! Nothing wrong with a little amateur purse making.

    Cha Cha’s professional purse

But when we get something hand made, and not in China, that appears to be the same creativity and quality as any high end brand, like Coach or higher perhaps?—and then .. it’s the same price point as those Coach bags. Well -

    It’s certainly SOMETHING Special!

Take the bag above; look at the lines, the uniqueness, the leather, the hardware (and the symmetry, thank you)! This bag was made by an Etsy seller, and it sold (yes, it’s sold) for (only) about $200.

They’re not all bags this spectacular and luxe over at Cha Cha’s shop, but there is a nice demi flap purse going for $145. If you fell in love with the bag above, though, one other great aspect of indie design and shopping is that you may ask the designer to make another - and she probably will!

    Fangobbles Geometric Floral Bag

June 19, 2007 by Designer Ella

    Fangobbles Creamsicle Bag

Now, simple sewn fabric indie purses don’t have to be boring with grandmother style. Even a basic bag can be chic in a sleek geometric shape with a cute fabric. This “Creamsicle” purse even has matching fabric straps, which I usually hate, but somehow here it works. So much so, it deserves a feature.

Fangobbles’ signature shape is this triangle-esque handbag with different fabrics. A girl can definitely find something she likes in her Etsy shop, or use their “convo” feature to inquire about other prints.

And when an item goes on sale in this shop, it may not last long, so keep on it. Hopefully you’ll learn to love indie, if you don’t already, just browse Etsy! There’s something for everyone, including the snobbiest fashionistas.

Handmade Floral Day Clutch by Microwave Girl on Etsy

May 23, 2007 by Designer Ella

I’ve finally begun knitting and attempting sewing (the learning process is moving along), so I’ve actually been more into handmade and indie bags more than the leather designer IT bags. (Hey, I’ve already got my Chloés and Stam, after all.)

    Microwave Girl Floral Clutch

And you know what, even the independent crafty world offers larger-sized clutches for day time, whether the designers follow trends or not. I love the “Chef” shape, pretty flowers and overall quality (I ordered a similar bag) of the Pleated Floral Clutch by Microwave Girl on handcrafters storefront, Etsy.com.

Measuring 16″ x 9″, this adorable purse is made from vintage upholstery fabric (!!) with a silk flower appliqué and even includes an interior pocket. Buy for only $55 right through Etsy, and you can pay with PayPal!
